Seven years in prison for raping his niece, starting when she was about 13. This was the sentence handed down yesterday by the Court of Cagliari to a man from Carbonia accused of abusing his sister's daughter on several occasions over a period of approximately five years. The judges also banned him from going near places frequented by minors.

The dispute

The defendant was accused of abusing the girl, exploiting the 13-year-old's reverential fear of her uncle to force her to perform sexual acts. According to the Prosecutor's Office, the teenager was allegedly persuaded to undress for a shiatsu massage, and then groped in various areas of her body, including her private parts. A few years later, he then grabbed the young girl by the arm, restraining her, and pulling her toward him, intending to be touched. Finally, when the niece became an adult, her uncle allegedly hit her in the face with a broom. After that incident (she had previously told no one), she decided to file a complaint.
