A sewage stream that has been flowing for a year and a half, and the unbearable stench that some days makes the air truly unbreathable, but despite the reports to Abbanoa, local police and ASL no one has yet managed to solve the problem of the residents of Via Milano, forced to live in close contact with an open-air sewer. The problem is linked to the fact that the leak does not come from a street manhole, but from a private courtyard, which is why - despite repeated requests from residents of the area - the intervention teams of the water and sewer management body, which took over from the Municipality - have not intervened.
"From September 2023 to today we have asked everyone for help, but the sewer drainage continues to flow undisturbed - explain the residents of via Milano -, the stench is unbearable, and with summer approaching the situation has become unsustainable. Staying here has become unlivable, we hope we do not have to live with these inconveniences for much longer".
From the opposition benches, councilors Francesco Dessì and Silvano Corda ask the mayor, Beniamino Garau, to take a position: «The mayor is responsible for public health, we ask ourselves what he is waiting for to set up an emergency team to solve this problem that has been going on for almost two years. It is unacceptable that people have to live in close contact with an open sewer».
Mayor Garau explains how, with the transfer of the water and sewerage service to Abbanoa, the Municipality does not have the power to intervene to repair the faults: «We have reported the situation several times, but finally the managing body has assured us – despite the problem involving a private well – that an intervention plan will soon be prepared».
The work on the manhole in the courtyard of Via Milano from which the wastewater comes will be carried out by an Abbanoa intervention team, but the user concerned will pay for it, and the cost will be charged to him on his bill: «Abbanoa normally intervenes for the maintenance of the sewer connections carried out in compliance with the regulation and exclusively in the section that goes from the inspection downstream of the siphon to the entry into the urban sewer network. The adaptation or compliance of existing systems for the needs of the customer is always the responsibility of the latter. In this specific case, it is not in fact the manager's need to provide for the adaptation of the systems since, despite being inspectable, the part that is on public property is regularly functioning and is not creating problems. However, given that we are faced with a serious health and hygiene situation, with wastewater spilling onto the street which in fact determines potential pollution of the places, on Wednesday 23 April our technicians will be on site to resolve the problem».
