No more heavy vehicles on the Maddalena beach seafront: the administration aims to ban the circulation of trucks and lorries on Viale Sant'Efisio before the summer. The long lines of articulated trucks on the sides of the main road of Maddalena beach could soon be a thing of the past, the Municipality is working on a project that aims to ease the amount of traffic from the main seaside area of Capoterra.
A problem, that of the presence of heavy vehicles that stop at the Maddalena bar, raised several times by residents, struggling with the wild parking they have to deal with. The mayor, Beniamino Garau, explains the reason why - especially during the summer months - the presence of trucks represents a limitation to the potential of the beach frequented by the people of Capoterra and by the many residents of the nearby towns: "The parking of heavy vehicles cannot be compatible with the development ideas that we have in mind for this coastline, seeing long lines of trucks parked a stone's throw from the beach is no longer tolerable, moreover their circulation represents an obstacle to traffic. In recent days a truck mounted a sidewalk and caused quite a bit of damage, we are trying to strengthen the camper area and increase the services available to bathers, in a self-respecting tourist location so many vehicles cannot circulate as in an industrial area".
The offices and the local police command are working to make changes to the circulation. "The transit ban will start this summer - says Garau -, a decision that will allow us to decongest traffic on the main road of Maddalena".
From the minority benches, the leader of the Democratic Party, Efisio De Muru, agrees with the idea of the Garau Council: "The seafront deserves to be enhanced, it cannot become a parking area for heavy vehicles. To enhance the beach and the local clubs, and to make the Capoterra beach a place capable of attracting tourists once and for all, it is necessary to put a limit to the traffic problem".
Blocking the transit of heavy vehicles would also be useful for Giovanni Ruggeri, administrator of the Maddalena condominium: "The worst moment is in the morning, from 7:30 - when between six and seven buses arrive at the same time, with heavy vehicles parked - often even in no-parking areas - the traffic is paralyzed. I understand the need of the drivers to stop at the bar, to accommodate them it would be appropriate to identify another area that does not create inconvenience to traffic".
