The only data available are those of Istat. Sardinia is recording a worrying increase in deaths from tumors: according to the latest data available for the Island, deaths from tumors in 2021 were 33.01% with 5,244 deaths, becoming the leading cause of death, up 1.01% compared to 32% in 2020 and even above the national average of 29.4%. "This is why we felt the need for an initiative that would draw attention to a fundamental tool for everyone's health such as the Regional Tumor Registry, established by regional law 21/2012, but which in fact never became operational. Sardinia cannot wait any longer".
This is what the organizers of the conference “Regional Tumor Registry: a necessary tool for everyone's health” say, which will be held in Cagliari on Friday 25 October, starting at 4 pm, in the conference room of the Oncology Hospital, in via Jenner.
"Its lack of operation", add Francesco Carta of Medicina Democratica Sardegna and Giancarlo Nonis of the Sa Luxi Committee, " does not allow us to have an updated, reliable and homogeneous picture of the spread of the various tumor pathologies in the different areas of the regional territory: this prevents effective control and prevention action, also in relation to carcinogenic risks in the territory, attributable to industrial activities or otherwise, and to formulate hypotheses about the causes, for the necessary removal and remediation actions".
The proceedings will open with institutional greetings from Maria Teresa Addis, Health Director of the Businco Hospital in Cagliari; Emilio Montaldo, President of the Order of Physicians of Cagliari; Rosanna Cadelano, doctor of the Sa Luxi Committee; Giampaolo Lilliu, Regional Association of former Asbestos Exposed - AREA Oristano odv; Rosa Maria Caliandro, Democratic Medicine; Giuseppe Frau, Vice President of the Regional Council of Sardinia). The proceedings will be coordinated by Roberto Loddo of Il Manifesto Sardo.
This will be followed by reports from Paolo Crosignani, professor and former Head of the Tumor Registry and Environmental Epidemiology Unit of the National Cancer Institute of Milan; Stefano Ferretti, professor at the University of Ferrara and doctor at the Emilia-Romagna Tumor Registry; Pierluigi Cocco, Honorary Professor University of Manchester – Centre for Occupational and Environmental Health; Mario Budroni, doctor at the Sassari and Northern Sardinia Tumor Registry; Mario Usala, doctor at the Nuoro and Central Sardinia Tumor Registry; Domenico Scanu, doctor at ISDE (International Association of Doctors for the Environment); Edoardo Bai, doctor at the Tumor Registry and Environmental Epidemiology Unit of the National Cancer Institute of Milan; Sabina Contu, lawyer and Italian Association of Asbestos Exposed (AIEA); Maria Bernardetta Aloi, former oncologist at the “Businco” Oncology Hospital in Cagliari; Maria Teresa Ionta, oncologist and Sardinian Association for Prevention and Oncological Assistance (ASPAO).
