A flurry of appeals to the Regional Administrative Court (TAR), a criminal investigation, and tensions on the spot between Tavolara Bay staff and activists at the permanent protest: the temperature is rising at Cala Finanza, and the protest today could also move to the Administrative Court building in Cagliari.
Tensions are high, and the revocation of the ZES Unica permit for the glamping project hasn't eased the situation. Tavolara Bay is responding forcefully to the measures taken by the Municipality of Loiri Porto San Paolo, the Region, and the Italian Government (Department for the South). Environmentalists and activists from the GRIG (Legal Intervention Group) and the Surra movement, the latter holding a permanent protest at Cala Finanza, are also taking action. There have been close encounters between protesters and security personnel at the former Villa Joy. In one instance, the Coast Guard intervened, but without any public order issues. Activists are stationed on the Cala Finanza beach, exclusively on the state-owned portion. The situation is tense; in recent days, the Sassari Police Headquarters advised Loiri Mayor Francesco Lai to avoid a face-to-face meeting with protesters on a specific occasion.
Appeals to the TAR
Today, the Regional Administrative Court (TAR) is hearing the appeal by the Region and GRIG against the ZES, which was revoked by the government. However, the Region may still ask the judges to rule. Other appeals, this time filed by Tavolara Bay, will be heard on July 26th and in early November.
Criminal investigation
Meanwhile, the GRIG has filed a new complaint regarding the interventions at Cala Finanza (clearing of vegetation and construction of trails). These are matters that the Forestry Corps has been investigating for some time. The latest development is that the acting Tempio prosecutor, Alessandro Bosco, and his deputy, Sebastiano Carpinato, are awaiting information from investigators at the Tempio Forestry Inspectorate. These documents could open a new and broad investigation into the Cala Finanza case.
