The Garden of the Righteous among the Sardinian Nations in Cagliari was desecrated: the commemorative plaque dedicated to the Righteous and the victims of the October 7 massacre was covered. «A gesture – attacks Mario Carboni, president of the Chenabura Sardos Pro Israel association – which has all the characteristics of an anti-Semitic action».
The Garden of the Sardinian Righteous, created in the open air space of the Siotto Foundation, inaugurated on 26 January 2023, hosts six plaques with the names of the Sardinian Righteous who, at the risk of their own lives, saved Jews persecuted during the Shoah. Furthermore, there are plaques commemorating the unknown Righteous, the Roma and Sinti, the Armenians and other peoples who were victims of genocide.
«This episode is a painful reminder of the importance of keeping alive the memory of the Shoah and the acts of heroism performed by the Righteous Among the Nations. The Jewish community and the Chenàbura association are committed to defending the Garden of the Righteous and fighting all forms of anti-Semitism, so that such horrors are never repeated again", adds Carboni who has decided to make what happened public and is now evaluating it with the lawyers of the association the possibility of submitting a complaint to the judicial authority.
"While waiting to understand how such an action came about, there remains disappointment and displeasure towards a gesture with a clear anti-Semitic meaning and for this reason we want those responsible to be identified and sanctioned for their gesture", concludes the president of Chenabura.
