Einstein Telescope Investigations at Mamone Penal Colony: Researchers and Inmates Work Side by Side

On October 14 and 15, researchers from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) will return to the Onanì-Mamone prison in the Nuoro area to conclude the first phase of the geophysical investigations begun last March.
Once again, the researchers will work alongside the inmates who played a key role in installing the field instruments in the spring. The work will be divided into two parts.
The sixteen seismic stations installed in March, which continuously recorded the background noise of the Sardinian subsurface for six months, will be removed, having completed their task. The data collected will allow the identification of the main sources of seismic disturbance in the area . The magnetic and magnetotelluric station, however, will remain active: the high quality of the electromagnetic data motivated its maintenance. In preparation for winter, the installation will be consolidated to ensure continuity of measurements.
The investigations, coordinated by the Center for Geophysical Characterization for the Einstein Telescope (CCGET) and begun as part of the recently concluded MEET project, aim to document the geophysical silence of the area of the former Sos Enattos mine (Lula), a candidate for hosting the Einstein Telescope, the future European gravitational wave observatory capable of detecting ripples in space-time generated by extreme cosmic events.
These geophysical measurement campaigns are the result of collaboration between the INGV (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology), the Ministry of Justice, and the State Property Agency - Sardinia Regional Directorate. The prison management and the Penitentiary Police provided logistical and operational support.
