Cagliari, taxi drivers protest against the new licenses granted by the Municipality
Shortage of white cars especially in summer, procession in front of Palazzo Bacaredda: «No to seasonal permits, yes to double driving»Eighteen new taxi licenses in Cagliari (five for transporting disabled people). Plus another ten seasonal vehicles, which in the Municipality's plans should address the shortage of white cars, which cannot be found in the summer period.
It is the last 10 that triggered the protest of the taxi drivers, who this morning gathered in front of Palazzo Bacaredda to contest the resolution adopted by the municipal council led by Paolo Truzzu, on the proposal of the traffic councilor Alessio Mereu.
«The ten seasonal ones», says Giampaolo Zedda of Federtaxi, «must be replaced with the green light for double driving» of the vehicles that already have the concession. The same vehicles could therefore cover longer shifts.
«The additional licenses», it is written in the resolution, «will have a temporary and seasonal nature and cannot have a duration exceeding 12 months, extendable for a maximum of a further 12 months and can be issued exclusively to individuals who already hold licenses for the operation of the taxi service".
The cost of the new 18 licenses will be established after "a survey of the local market value". According to unofficial estimates, the value should be around 90 thousand euros each, money that will be divided among the 105 taxi drivers in the capital.
