The Region is opening its parking lots to the residents of Cagliari, which are not used by employees in the evenings and at night. For now, it's just an announcement, but a trial period should begin soon.
This was stated by Local Government Councillor Francesco Spanedda in the Regional Council, during the discussion of a motion presented by the Brothers of Italy party, first signatory of which was former mayor of Cagliari Paolo Truzzu.
"The traffic issue has been discussed insistently for years," the Melonian representative explained, "and one of the problems is the high level of car use by residents, partly due to a limited public transportation system. But in urban centers, there are a large number of parking spaces that remain empty after work hours, when employees leave the offices. It would be logical and useful to open them to the public, to benefit mobility and commerce."
The council confirmed that the project was already under consideration: "I want to reassure this council," Spanedda began, "because we are already implementing the framework outlined in this motion through an experimental project that has involved the municipality of Cagliari from the outset, with which discussions have been ongoing for several months."
The councilor announced that the trial will begin soon, but there are still some aspects that need to be refined: "For example, the barriers will be positioned differently. Those parking lots weren't designed to be public, so there will be an effort to adapt them."
The motion, later approved, calls for the establishment of a consultation table with the mayors of the main municipalities to reach a solution to ease traffic pressure in city centers and offer new parking opportunities for residents and visitors.
