«The 18-month-old girl who had been detained in the women's section of the Cagliari-Uta prison since October 20th has returned home with her mother . The little girl, who was able to see her siblings and father again, left the institution this morning thanks to the order of the Cagliari Surveillance Magistrates. A gesture of humanity that will allow the family to be reunited again, after the necessary checks» .
This was announced by Maria Grazia Caligaris , president of the association Socialismo Diritti Riforme Odv , who expressed «particular appreciation for a decision that allows the little girl to return to her family and the young mother to look after her other 4 children, the eldest of whom is just 9 years old».
The woman was supposed to serve a sentence of 1 year and 8 months, for a crime committed in 2019 and today she was released. "Certainly in the evaluation of the Surveillance magistrates - the president of Sdr states - in addition to the living conditions in the cell of the little girl, the conditions of the mother were also considered, who showed strong anxiety which however could not be controlled with support drugs because the woman is breastfeeding ".
The association recalls that, "despite their few months of life, boys and girls entering prison suffer a trauma whose consequences are not verifiable until the years of growth. In Italy, unfortunately, there are over 30 children in detention, some in Icam (Institutes with Reduced Custody for Detained Mothers). There remains the problem of managing the lives of these creatures who - concludes Caligaris - as is evident have the right to be with their mother but at the same time also to a life in freedom. There remains a question regarding the penal execution which perhaps in some cases, also out of a sense of humanity, should include the use of an electronic bracelet. We cannot forget that with the Security Decree there is a risk of filling the penitentiary institutions with minors. In Sardinia there is still a little girl in prison in the Sassari-Bancali District Prison".
