A hot and muggy weekend in Cagliari, which today and tomorrow – Sunday 2 August – has the maximum alert level in the Ministry of Health bulletin on heat waves .

A red-flagged weekend, indicating emergency conditions with potential negative health effects on healthy, active people , not just at-risk subgroups such as the elderly, very young children, and people with chronic diseases.

Temperatures feel very high, as also indicated by the regional Civil Protection Department, which issued an alert on Thursday valid until Monday, August 3.

And the Municipality is taking action. Yesterday, the Committee for the Prevention of Crucifixion (COC) convened a meeting, which decided to close the cemeteries of Bonaria, San Michele, and Pirri during the hottest hours (from 12:30 PM to 4:00 PM). The Tuvixeddu park was also closed for the entire day today and tomorrow .

The Municipality also recalls the regional ordinance prohibiting outdoor work during the hottest hours of the day in the agriculture, horticulture, construction, and plant engineering sectors, which are particularly exposed to the effects of high temperatures.

To offer some relief, climate-controlled shelters have been established—cooler and more comfortable public spaces thanks to greenery, shade, and drinking fountains . These include several city parks: San Michele, Monte Urpinu, Terramaini, Musica, Giovanni Paolo II, Ex Vetreria, Giardini Pubblici, Giardino Sotto le Mura, Orto Dei Cappuccini, and Bonaria. They also include nearby gardens and green spaces equipped with adequate shade, benches, and drinking fountains, municipal libraries (Mem-Mediateca del Mediterraneo, Pirri Library, GB Tuveri Library, Montevecchio Library, and the Municipal Art Gallery Library), cultural spaces (Municipal Art Gallery, Exma, Lazzaretto di Sant'Elia, Jewish Ghetto), neighborhood centers, senior centers, and district offices, museums, air-conditioned municipal buildings, and sports facilities.

Health and social services remain fully committed. The Social Emergency Service is available 24/7 at 345.6865769 . Additionally, the Telephone Helpline, established in collaboration with the Red Cross, continues to handle reports and requests for assistance, especially for the elderly and vulnerable.
