Cagliari, emergency abandonment of waste and car wrecks: the daily battle of the "007" of the Local Police
Since the beginning of the year, there have already been 15 complaints. Tracing the owner is not easy: a real investigation is neededLeaving waste since last October has been a criminal offence. And in Cagliari the agents of the environmental supervision section of the Local Police go hunting for uncivilized people who throw bags of unsorted rubbish even in the middle of the pavements . And there have already been 15 complaints since the beginning of the year: tracing the owner of the waste is not easy, and a real investigation is needed. "We look inside the bags for anything that would allow us to get to the owner of the waste," explains one of the service's plainclothes policemen.
The 21 agents of the environmental supervision section of the Municipal Police, coordinated by Major Pancrazio Cadoni, deal with many other aspects: landfills, control activities on sewage discharges, degradation of greenery, animal welfare, the presence of asbestos and serial accumulators . Among the major emergencies is also the abandonment of old cars. «Before the Covid period», underlines Cadoni, «there were around eighty a year. In 2023 we managed to remove more than 150. And in two months we are already at 47."
The battle for respect for the environment is not simple. Last year, with their activity, the police discovered 41 landfills: land used for the accumulation of waste of all types. Three areas were seized. Then there are repeated abandonments in the same areas. Like in via Monferrato, in San Michele: some of those responsible were tracked down and cleaned up their waste. The others will pay the removal costs which will be carried out by the Municipality shortly. «Areas at risk? The suburbs as far as car wrecks are concerned. The abandonment of bags, however, occurs throughout the city", comments Major Cadoni.
