Cagliari does not forget its greatest champion . The City Council today unanimously approved a motion to establish a week of events in honor of Gigi Riva, to be held every year in the week of November 7, the day of his birth.

The initiative, proposed by councilors Ferdinando Secchi and Alessandra Zedda of the League, but modified by the majority, is a tribute to a man who left an indelible mark on the history of football and in the hearts of Sardinians.

Rombo di Tuono was not only a symbol of Cagliari Calcio and the Italian National Team, but also an example of loyalty, passion and love for Sardinia, his adopted land.

"He was an example of class and ability that gave voice to the sense of belonging to his city that adopted him as a boy, to Sardinia, but more generally to all of Italy," said Secchi, "Many of my contemporaries had the privilege of seeing him play but for the generation that was not able to experience his exploits on a football pitch and his special personal story, telling the story of Gigi Riva requires a prologue."

With this measure, the Council promotes a sporting and cultural event that involves the entire community, the world of sport and culture . The goal is to keep alive the memory of Riva, not only as an extraordinary footballer but also as a man of values, deeply tied to Cagliari.

" Gigi Riva was first and foremost a man of virtue and an absolute champion . He was a man who, without wanting to, became a model, an example of ethics and integrity throughout his sporting career and beyond," continues Secchi, "he became the symbol of Sardinia, creating an indissoluble bond with his people who loved him with a unique and absolute love. Certainly for his sporting exploits, but not only that."

The event will not only be a celebration, but an opportunity to strengthen the city's identity and pass on to new generations the legacy of a champion who made Sardinia his home.

And so with this decision, the City Council confirms its desire to honor those who have written unforgettable pages in the history of the city, so that the name of Gigi Riva remains forever a point of reference for all the people of Cagliari and all Sardinians .
