Cagliari, an olive tree for Gigi Riva: the city's tribute to the Myth inaugurated
Mayor Zedda remembers Rombo di Tuono on the day he would have turned 80: «You are part of this city»On the eightieth anniversary of Gigi Riva's birth , the city of Cagliari pays homage to the Legend with an olive tree donated by Rosy Sgaravatti and a plaque in the name of Rombo di Tuono .
The ceremony was held this morning in Piazza Endrich in Terrapieno , with the sons Nicola and Mauro who unveiled the plaque with the words: " The City of Cagliari in memory of its champion Gigi Riva ".
Present, in addition to the Mito family, were the Councilor for Culture Maria Francesca Chiappe , the Councilor for Sport Giuseppe Macciotta , the Councilor for the Environment Luisa Giua Marassi , the President of the City Council Marco Benucci , Cagliari Calcio with the General Director Stefano Melis and the Sporting Director Nereo Bonato , the journalist Giorgio Porrà, Stefano Arrica and a large representation of the city's City Council.
«Happy birthday Gigi», the message from Mayor Massimo Zedda . «You are and will always be a living and unforgettable part of the history of Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy and one of the greatest players on the planet. Legendary and gentleman, composed and elegant, shy and humble, extraordinary son of our splendid land, with strong and tenacious roots. For this reason today, on your birthday, the municipal administration wanted to pay homage to you by planting an olive tree. It is located in the Terrapieno in Viale Regina Elena. Throughout the week the city will pay homage to you and I thank the many people who are working hard to organize various moments of collective remembrance. Today too I take this opportunity to embrace your family, Gianna, Mauro, Nicola and all your grandchildren, the many friends and teammates who have been close to you, all the people who feel connected to you, from children to the elderly, who have an affectionate thought, with that silent respect also observed on the day of the funeral».
The event is part of the many initiatives of the Gigi Riva Football Week , ongoing throughout the week.
