The loot they managed to save is precious: 560 kilos of white quartz. It was recovered from the showers on the Sinis coast. But not only that: 14 thousand cigarette butts and 96 bags of waste were collected, for a total of 410 kilos of garbage . This is the important work carried out during the summer season by the Sentinels of Sinis, the guardian angels of the coast who in three months have covered kilometers and kilometers: almost 2 million steps, walking the length and breadth of the Cabrarese coast. The initiative was promoted this time again by Legambiente Sardegna in collaboration with the Sinis Marine Protected Area. This year 105 volunteers took to the field, coming from all over Italy and beyond.
"The Sentinels are now known and respected, working carefully and with a level of training that should not be taken for granted - said the mayor of Cabras Andrea Abis - It is a team effort and a cultural exchange that we like very much".
The Sentinels of Sinis are now recognized as a summer garrison of the coast and in addition to cleaning activities from the presence of beached waste, they acquire first-hand awareness, but above all they carry out information and awareness-raising activities for bathers, tourists and citizens, on the importance of the dune ecosystem and therefore on the correct use of the beaches.
"In recent years, the data provided by Legambiente have allowed us to gain further insight into the changing habits of those who frequent the beaches with respect to environmental matters," says Environment Councilor Carlo Carta. "The work to be done is still vast and demanding. We have found it necessary to modify the collection areas, providing a greater number of containers to minimize uncontrolled littering, including that of cigarette butts. There is still the fight against those who take advantage of the constant collection service to abandon bulky items on the coast. During ecological days, but also during the rest of the summer season, it often happens that we are faced with real acts of incivility. The work of the Sentinels takes on an even more important value when we manage to get a reflection from those who until now have always thrown away waste without any awareness of the environmental damage done."
