He had lost his way, but thanks to a family of vacationers, he has now started a new life. This is the story of Gavino, a mongrel with a thick coat, who was recently found wandering the streets of his village, hungry and visibly worn out by life as a stray .
He now lives with a family from Livorno who were vacationing on the Sinis Peninsula this summer. It was Giovanni, Serena, and Margherita Cavallini who decided to adopt Gavino, offering him not only a home, but also the certainty of finally being loved and protected. Today, he lives in Livorno, welcomed as a true member of the family .
This story is not only an example of recovery and rebirth, but demonstrates how compassion and responsibility can transform abandonment into a new beginning, restoring dignity and serenity to an animal that had lost all hope.
"For years, the municipal administration has paid particular attention to the well-being of animals, especially dogs and cats, through measures to combat stray animals, financial support for sterilization, incentives for chipping, and promotion of adoptions through the BaiBau portal," explains Mayor Andrea Abis. "The Cavallini family, by caring for a stray in poor physical condition, has carried out a virtuous adoption initiative that we greatly appreciate, and for this we thank them fondly."
"Prompt reporting of stray dogs is essential to intervene, care for them, and sterilize them, preventing the phenomenon from multiplying and becoming increasingly difficult to manage," emphasizes Councilor for Culture Carlo Trincas . "The city administration, among the initiatives of the Baibau project, has long promoted the establishment of a municipal registry for volunteers willing to provide temporary foster care for found animals while they await adoption. This prevents the animal from immediately entering the shelter, providing a more welcoming transition, where care, safety, and support are guaranteed while awaiting adoption. This collaboration between citizens and institutions represents a concrete step toward a more responsible community, one that protects animal welfare and reduces straying. Anyone who wishes to join our registry can contact their local police office."
