Almost four years of closure. This is the situation of the Neurorehabilitation inpatient department of the PO San Michele dell'Arnas Brotzu, closed since November 2020 and which until that date hosted about ten beds. Now, the trade union organization Usb Pubblico Impiego Sanità is asking for greater clarity on the matter, with a note sent - among others - also to the President of the Region Alessandra Todde, to the Health Councilor Armando Bartolazzi and to the President of the Regional Council Piero Comandini.

"It is clear," the alarm raised by Gianfranco Angioni, regional manager of Usb Sanità, "that this closure, which occurred in the most important Hospital Trust in Sardinia, in addition to worsening the regional situation due to the very limited number of neurorehabilitation beds, has created a devastating impact and a healthcare vacuum in the province of Cagliari with a very serious prejudice towards patients suffering from serious brain injuries from the after-effects of cranial encephalic trauma, cerebral hemorrhages, meningitis, post-anoxic states, vegetative state, hydrocephalus, spinal cord injuries, degenerative diseases such as Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis and others."

The case. After the closure in 2020, a department had been set up at the Businco Hospital. «A completely unsuccessful choice», accuses Angioni. Who adds: «It was not able to guarantee responses to the needs of severely neurolesioned patients, as the clinical organizational pathways need to interface with the various and different specialists present only at the San Michele Hospital».

The request is to proceed quickly with the reopening of the Neurorehabilitation department. "It would guarantee a 24/7, 365 day care service. Furthermore, global care with a multidisciplinary team would be essential to the complex management of severely neuro-injured patients", concludes Angioni, with Usb PI Sanità announcing further initiatives in the event of a lack of immediate response.
