A new outbreak of lumpy skin disease (LSD) was confirmed on May 6th in San Vito nel Sarrabus, in southeastern Sardinia. The new cases were confirmed by the veterinary services of the Cagliari Local Health Authority and the Sardinian Region.

One in Muravera and one in Villaputzu have been extinct since April 24th, while the one in Ballao, two others in Muravera, and the last one in San Vito remain active. Veterinarians from the Cagliari Local Health Authority are completing the culling of the cattle from the outbreak diagnosed in Sarrabus on May 6th.

The Veterinary Service is carrying out clinical visits in the disease protection zone on farms located within a 50 km radius (area subject to restrictions on the movement of cattle).

"As reiterated a few days ago, all farmers are encouraged to facilitate the collection of animals to certify that the inspections have been carried out," the Local Health Authority (ASL) announced. "At the same time, veterinary staff will administer booster vaccinations and vaccinate unvaccinated calves, aimed at preventing a resurgence of disease cases and the culling of all livestock." In the Cagliari Local Health Authority (ASL), over 20,000 animals must be vaccinated as quickly as possible.
