The Carabinieri found a small arsenal when they raided the home of a seventy-two-year-old man from Carbonia this morning, as part of the investigation that began after a homemade bomb exploded in the early hours of today , seriously injuring a 68-year-old woman on Via 18 Dicembre.
The explosive device was placed inside a wooden box at the edge of a plot of land. The 68-year-old was on her way to feed some turtles when she approached, curious: she moved the container and was hit by the explosion.
The military got to work immediately: they identified a possible connection between the episode and the seventy-two-year-old, known in the city for his "jack of all trades" services and already known to the police for previous episodes of harassment against a close acquaintance of the owner of the land next to which the bomb had exploded.
The combination of his manual skills and his past led the police to consider him the prime suspect.
The turning point came with the search of the house: the Carabinieri bomb squad discovered a clandestine laboratory containing various explosive materials, including some devices identical to the one that exploded a few hours earlier and already assembled with a detonator, battery and pressure-release primer. In addition, three modified pistols, several homemade silencers and equipment for the construction of further rudimentary explosive devices were seized.
The man was arrested on charges of attempted murder, manufacturing explosives and possession of illegal weapons. He is now in prison.
