Bluetongue is spreading: more than 1,300 outbreaks, the Region has a plan for 2.5 million vaccinations
Two and a half million vaccines to stop the epidemic, but there is a variant that escapes the currently authorized drugsA vaccination plan that includes the administration of approximately 2.5 million doses . This is the one developed by the Region against the spread of bluetongue in Sardinian farms, with the epidemic having exceeded 1,300 outbreaks on the Island.
This was reported by the president of Copagri Sardegna Giuseppe Patteri after a meeting with the regional councillors Gian Franco Satta (Agriculture) and Armando Bartolazzi (Health) .
Vaccines that will be able to contain serotypes 4 and 8, not 3, a very aggressive variant that has spread in particular in the Oristano area and on the south-western side and for which a vaccine has not yet been authorised .
"The hope - says Patteri - is that all breeders adhere to the plan illustrated. It is essential to vaccinate all flocks , even those where outbreaks have arisen for all asymptomatic animals, such as cattle, in order to avoid blocking movements".
"During the meeting - continues the president of Copagri - we also asked for and obtained guarantees on the immediate distribution of vaccine doses, at low costs, foreseeing the involvement of all public veterinary services, in agreement with company veterinarians. Now we will monitor the maintenance of the commitments undertaken by the Region and in the same way we will be prompt to request a prompt presentation of the 2025 vaccination plan, in order to avoid all the delays accumulated in the current year , partly due to the renewal of the Council and the Executive".
Another issue is that of monitoring the vector insect . «It requires the coordination of a rapid intervention unit that involves the professionals present in Laore , the Region must immediately deploy all the anti-parasitic control tools», declares the director of Copagri Sardegna, Mario Putzolu.
