Battleship Roma, Mattarella and the families of the victims on the Cavour in the Gulf of Asinara
The President of the Republic on the aircraft carrier for the eightieth anniversary of the sinkingThis morning the commemoration of the eightieth anniversary of the Battleship Roma in the presence of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. The relatives of the victims of the Roma arrived in the square of the Port Authority of Porto Torres, a totally armored area with the presence of the police: carabinieri, Guardia di Finanza, firefighters, state police, and the men of the Captaincy. Also on site was the arrival of Maria Bergamini Loedler, niece of Admiral Carlo Bergamini, victim of the sinking of the flagship of the Royal Navy. Also in the company of his daughter was the last of the 622 veterans of the "Roma", Gustavo Bellazzini, 102 years old in a few days.
He was welcomed by the Coast Guard soldiers who, this morning, made two trips to accompany civil military authorities, institutional representatives and families of the victims on the Cavour aircraft carrier, in the harbor a few miles from the coast of Porto Torres. The flagship of the Italian Navy headed towards the point of the sinking of the wreck, around 9.50 am, after the arrival of the soldiers, officers and non-commissioned officers, and the Defense Minister himself, Guido Crosetto, who landed on the runway of the Cavour, on board a helicopter that left Alghero military airport.
The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, arrived at 10.23 aboard the Airbus319 presidential helicopter, which landed at the military airport of Alghero. Transferred to the Navy's HH101 helicopter, he took off at 10.40am to reach the aircraft carrier where the commemoration of the sinking of the battleship is being celebrated.
