The vessel was 30 miles southeast of the port when the passengers, three men of French origin, called for help. The boat suffered a sail failure during navigation. At that point, with the sea in a storm, the helmsman had to resort to using the engine, which consequently consumed all the available fuel.
The vessel was adrift 30 miles south-east of the port of Arbatax and the passengers, three men of French origin, asked for help from the Coast Guard operations room in Via Tirreno. The distress call, received at 2 am last night, was picked up by the operators on duty who, under the coordination of the 13th Mrsc of Cagliari, ordered the intervention in the area of the patrol boat CP 811.
Having reached the point of coordinates communicated, after an initial moment in which the conditions of the boaters were ascertained, the crew of the Sar patrol boat encountered worsening marine weather conditions with very rough seas and gusts of wind up to 30 knots. Due to the situation and for safety reasons, the boaters were transferred aboard the patrol boat for the return to port.
For the sailing vessel, a 15-meter long vessel left adrift, the danger was immediately formalized by requesting the issuance of an urgent warning to mariners. In addition, immediately after the intervention, the first information was acquired by the personnel of the Arbatax Maritime District Office, led by Commander Mattia Caniglia, to reconstruct the dynamics of the accident.
