He got caught in an iron fence, while trying to follow the herd. The victim of the accident was a mouflon. This morning, the personnel of the Naval Logistics Base of Arbatax, the firefighters of Lanusei and Angela Scattu, a veterinarian contracted with the Province of Nuoro for the rescue of wounded game, intervened in via Vespucci to help a male mouflon that remained impaled on its left hind leg on an element of an iron railing that delimits a private property.
The animal, very affected by the unusual accident, was immediately freed and transported to the veterinary clinic that provided first aid, aimed above all at stemming the abundant hemorrhage due to the cut caused by the iron that penetrated deeply into the animal's flesh. The mouflon will subsequently be transferred to a zoological center in Monastir to be rehabilitated and returned to its colony of origin.
The problem of the mouflons of Arbatax has recently been addressed by the Forestry Department, the Department of the Environment and Forestas. An intervention protocol has already been drawn up that includes the capture, the search for genetic purity of the Ovis musimon species and their release in other territorial contexts of the Island. This colony of mouflons, which following the pandemic has expanded its range also within the village of Arbatax, is generating quite a bit of controversy from the citizens, as they often damage gardens and fruit trees, even jump on boats and not infrequently, during races, they also jump on car hoods. Their presence on the site can be traced back to the release of a pair at the end of the Sixties and whose descendants, losing the so-called "consuetudo revertendi" can no longer be classified in the legal status of tame animals and, for these reasons, must be declared unavailable heritage of the Region.
