The MUSA, the Archaeological Museum of Alghero, will be temporarily closed to the public starting February 16th to allow for a comprehensive project to remove architectural barriers and improve accessibility and visitor experience.
The project is funded with approximately €240,000 through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, with resources from NextGenerationEU – Mission 1 “Digitalization, innovation, competitiveness and culture”, Measure 1 “Cultural heritage for the next generation”, Component 3 “Culture 4.0” and is promoted by the Municipality of Alghero and the Alghero Foundation.
"This is an investment in the future of the museum and the city," says Graziano Porcu, president of the Alghero Foundation. "Thanks to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) resources, we can launch a concrete initiative that puts people first, making the museum more accessible, recognizable, and accessible to all."
The work, which will be completed by June 30, 2026, will primarily affect the entrance and reception areas, eliminating the main physical barriers, adapting internal pathways, and improving flow organization.
New ergonomic furnishings are planned for the ticket office and information point, along with improved visibility of the spaces and improvements to visitor orientation. "With this project," adds Raffaella Sanna, Councilor for Culture, "we are taking a decisive step toward a more modern museum, capable of welcoming every citizen and visitor."
At the heart of the initiative is the PEBA, the Plan for the Elimination of Architectural Barriers recently approved by the City Council. Before closing, the museum invites residents and visitors to a special farewell weekend: free admission and guided tours on Saturday, February 14th and Sunday, February 15th.
