Another arrest at Alghero Airport for forged documents. Following the recent arrest of a 21-year-old Georgian man traveling to Ireland , border police at the "Riviera del Corallo" airport stopped another Georgian citizen who was attempting to board a Ryanair flight to Cork with a counterfeit passport. The 43-year-old man presented himself at security with a Latvian passport . However, the document immediately aroused the suspicion of border police officers, who, using their technical equipment and subsequent cross-checks with police databases , confirmed the passport had been altered. The Georgian citizen was therefore arrested on charges under Article 497-bis of the Criminal Code, relating to possession and use of forged documents valid for travel abroad.
After the formal procedures, the man appeared before the Sassari judicial authorities in a fast-track hearing. The court validated the arrest and imposed a suspended 10-month prison sentence , also considering his lack of a criminal record in Italy.
This is the second similar incident recorded in just a few days at the Alghero airport , prompting law enforcement to further tighten checks on non-Schengen flights, deemed to be more exposed to the risk of illegal immigration both on arrival and departure. Furthermore, with the start of the summer season , the new procedures established by the European Entry Exit System have also come into force at Alghero Airport, the new border control system for third-country nationals that introduces mandatory biometric checks for non-EU passengers entering and leaving Italy.
