Controversy in Alghero over the organization of the open water swimming championship in the Porto Conte bay.

Pointing the finger at the “Word Aquatics Open Water Swimming Junior Championships” is the president of the Environment Commission, Christian Mulas, concerned about the impact that the sporting event will have on the delicate coastal system of Mugoni.

"Although we are proud that Alghero is the destination for these sporting events and the first Italian city to host this important event, I wonder why exactly inside a Regional Park and a Marine Protected Area?", asks Mulas. And he adds: "An area that by ministerial regulation and by a specification wanted by the Park itself, does not allow professional fishermen to work inside for six months of the year, but it allows such impactful events to be held".

The participation of approximately 280 athletes is expected, "to which must be added the members of the national delegations, the judges, the boats, the staff, the parents, the volunteers and the spectators", continues the president of the council commission who now asks for "an impact assessment document relating to the event", urging the mayor to "proceed quickly to the nomination of the new Board of Directors of the Special Company, so that the initiatives of the same Company and its staff are soon brought back on the tracks of sustainability. I ask for the urgent intervention of the municipal administration to bring the management back to interact, as per the statute, with the administration itself, remembering that it manages a regional park where the objective always remains the sustainability of everything that is done and not a playground where everything is allowed".
