Alghero celebrates Sant Jordi, patron saint of Catalonia
The initiatives for six days starting from 23 AprilSant Jordi , patron saint of Catalonia and protector of lovers, will also be celebrated in Alghero on April 23rd .
According to tradition, St. George defeated the dragon from whose blood a rose garden sprouted. The Diada de Sant Jordi has been celebrated throughout Catalonia since 1926, setting up book stalls in the squares and distributing red roses. It's also the symbol day of universal literature.
Alghero has always paid homage to the festivity with initiatives and events and this year too the program is particularly rich and will go on for six consecutive days, including exhibitions, book presentations, debates and a special display in the windows of the shops participating in the shopping center nature of the historic center of Alghero.
Today the press conference in the Hotel Institute in Piazza Sulis, with all the protagonists of the cultural initiative. The mayor Mario Conoci , the Councilor for Culture Alessandro Cocco , the delegate of the Office of the Generalitat of Alghero, Gustau Navarro , the manager of the Hotel Institute Vincenzo Scanu and Vittorio Nonis of the Il Labirinto bookshop were there. Numerous cultural associations and the historian Tonino Budruni collaborate in the organization of the numerous cultural activities scheduled for World Book and Rose Day, led by the Natural Shopping Center "Al Centro Storico".
"Alghero demonstrates a cultural liveliness also in the literary field which certainly should be underlined and valued", underlined Mayor Conoci. Just as happens with "Sant Jordi a l'Alguer", which confirms the commitment and interest of the Administration, which thanks to the strong synergy now established with the world of associations, schools and the Delegation of the Catalan Government in Italy, continues successfully in the numerous initiatives that promote and encourage the normal use of the Algherese language among citizens.
