There were moments of great apprehension this morning in Alghero for an athlete registered for the Ironman 70.3 scheduled for tomorrow on the Riviera del Corallo.

According to initial reconstructions, the cyclist, a 31-year-old Russian citizen, was riding his bicycle along Viale Primo Maggio when, for reasons still being investigated by local police, he struck a car in front of him. The impact was particularly violent, and the athlete apparently broke the vehicle's rear window, sustaining serious injuries.

His condition immediately appeared serious, requiring emergency medical intervention. A 118 ambulance arrived on the scene, activated by the Areus operations center in Sassari. After initial treatment and stabilization, the injured man was transported with a red code to the emergency room of the Alghero Civil Hospital.

The man, who was supposed to participate in the international competition tomorrow, is hospitalized with a guarded prognosis.

Local police officers are conducting investigations to reconstruct the exact circumstances of the accident. Some passengers on a public bus witnessed the bicycle colliding with the car.
