They were returning home after spending a few hours at the Santa Barbara oasis, on the northern outskirts of Perdasdefogu. The 64-year-old grandmother and her grandson, residents of the village, were traveling in a Fiat Panda that crashed into a tree around 3:45 PM today.
The cause of the loss of control of the small car is still under investigation, but initial speculation suggests the woman suffered a sudden illness. Her grandmother and granddaughter suffered facial trauma and were trapped inside the vehicle, which completely crumpled.
To free the two injured people from the wreckage, the Lanusei firefighters had to use hydraulic shears. The local ambulance responded to the scene, followed by the Echo Lima 3 helicopter, the Areus helicopter from Elmas, which transported the boy (with a red code for the incident) to Brotzu Hospital in Cagliari. The woman was also transferred to the same hospital (by ambulance). Their conditions are reassuring.
