13.7% of Sardinians give up medical care: the worst figure in Italy is recorded on the island, where health spending is 548 euros per capita.
These are the main data that emerge from the Gimbe Foundation report on private healthcare spending in Italy in 2023, commissioned by the National Welfare & Health Observatory (Onws) which analyses the growing economic burden supported by families and the critical issues of the supplementary healthcare system.
The analysis focuses on the numbers of total health expenditure, that of families and that intermediated by funds and insurance. But also on the differences between regions, on international comparisons, on the main items of health expenditure by families, on the renunciation of treatment, on the role of supplementary health care.
In Sardinia, per capita health expenditure - by comparing the health expenditure transmitted to the Health Card System to the Istat resident population on 1 January 2023 - is equal to 548 euros (Italian average 730).
In general, the regions with the best performances in the Essential Levels of Assistance (Lea) record a per capita expenditure higher than the national average, while those in the South and/or in the Recovery Plan are placed below. As regards the renunciation of treatment, in 2023 13.7% of Sardinian citizens renounced treatment (Italian average), a negative record among the regions.
