There are 147 new Sardinian mayors elected, approximately 40% of the total of the island (377), in the round of administrative elections which ended yesterday with the start of the counting of the votes , which continued - in some cases - until the early hours of today.
And once the counting is over , the only run-off of the five possible ones in towns with more than 15,000 inhabitants or provincial capitals is that of Tempio Pausania , where the high turnout (68%) and the four candidates in the running have created the conditions for the double round which will take place on 21 and 22 June between the incumbent Gianni Addis (32.8%) and the civic outsider Gianna Masu (24.89%).
On the island, 61.6% of eligible voters cast their ballots, compared to 59.6% in the previous elections. For 62 candidates in small towns, reaching a quorum was enough to celebrate victory. In the others, many were re-elected, such as the mayor of Ottana (Nuoro), who is under investigation for attempted extortion and was placed under house arrest just yesterday. Only 25 women will wear the tricolor sash.
QUARTU – In the three main towns on the island with more than 15,000 inhabitants called to vote (Quartu Sant'Elena, Porto Torres, and Sestu), the new mayors won by a significant margin. This is the case in Quartu, Sardinia's third-largest city, where Graziano Milia is preparing for his fourth term as mayor, with 60.8% of the vote . With a broad coalition of progressives and the Five Star Movement, but without party symbols, he defeated center-right challenger Marco Porcu, who received 35.1%, and outsider Roberto Matta, who received 4%.
SESTU – Michele Cossa, a well-known face in regional politics with the center-right Reformists, wins in Sestu. He follows in his predecessor's footsteps against the progressive candidate Michela Mura. Cossa triumphs with 54%, while Mura's polls are limited to 36%. The other two contenders each received just over 4%.
PORTO TORRES – The centre-left is ahead in Porto Torres, a city of just under 21,000 inhabitants in the metropolitan area of Sassari, which reconfirmed Massimo Mulas with 62.7% , while the challenger of the Civic Identity Pole, Sara Dettori, stopped at 26.83%.
Regional President Alessandra Todde also sent her best wishes to the newly elected officials: "I am confident that you will carry out this task with a sense of responsibility, a spirit of service, and constant attention to the needs of citizens."
