Three years on the run, forged documents. A false identity to disappear into thin air. But a routine traffic stop cost Vincenzo Nettuno, 53, dearly. He's wanted because he's serving a seven-year prison sentence for international drug trafficking.
Carabinieri officers from the Giugliano in Campania mobile radio unit stopped him while he was driving a car. When asked for his documents, the man provided false information and claimed he didn't have a driver's license. The officers, however, refused to be persuaded. His nervous demeanor and evasive answers revealed something was wrong. A search of his person and vehicle was initiated. Hidden among his personal effects were a driver's license and a valid travel ID. These documents, when compared with police databases, revealed their secret. The photo didn't match. Both were fake. Taken to the station and subjected to photo identification, the truth emerged beyond any doubt. The man was Vincenzo Nettuno, wanted since 2023, the subject of an arrest warrant extending to the Schengen area.
He was sentenced to over seven years in prison for conspiracy to engage in international drug trafficking. He had been missing for three years. In addition to his arrest for being a fugitive, he was also arrested for possession and use of false identification documents.
