The final report of the technical consultancy on the death of Abderrahim Fakir is in the hands of the Bologna Public Prosecutor's Office, who have been investigating the matter since July 19, the day the 42-year-old died during a police intervention on Via Svevo al Pilastro . From what has been learned, no single cause has emerged for Fakir's death, which was due to acute respiratory failure. Instead, three factors have been identified as contributing factors: the crushing caused by the prone position of the body while the two officers held it down, cocaine use, and heart problems.
Meanwhile, the report includes transcripts of the two officers' words, recorded by body cameras. The officers say: "He's dead, ah." "Whoa... do I care?"
Now it will be up to the magistrates handling the case—Deputy Prosecutor Morena Plazzi and Public Prosecutors Domenico Ambrosino and Francesca Arienti—to assess whether the nearly 200-page expert report entrusted to the panel of experts provides a definitive answer to the cause of death. The three magistrates have scheduled a meeting for tomorrow, where they will discuss how to proceed and assess the relevance of one piece of information over another, before moving on to the next phase.
At the moment, in fact, there are six people registered in the preliminary register, the so-called "shield" provided when there is a possible cause of justification, for manslaughter: the two officers who intervened to block Fakir and the 4 Red Cross volunteers who arrived in Via Svevo to help him when he was ill.
However, time is running out (November 19), and prosecutors will have to decide whether to investigate the six people involved or close the case. Among the identified contributing factors, none are mutually exclusive and must be evaluated in terms of their contribution to the final event (i.e., Fakir's death) and their impact. In short, the magistrates will have to discuss this aspect and then draw their conclusions.
