A single seismic swarm that began on February 15 and is still ongoing, with at least 282 earthquakes of magnitude greater than zero, the highest number compared to previous swarms : this is currently the situation in Campi Flegrei , where the ongoing swarm has so far recorded a peak at 4.30 pm on February 16 with an earthquake of magnitude 3.9 with its epicentre at sea, and another peak at 12.19 am on February 17, again of magnitude 3.9 with its epicentre between Pozzuoli, Quarto and Bacoli.

"The seismic swarm at Campi Flegrei is continuing," observed Mauro Di Vito, director of the Vesuvius Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology. "The number of events recorded so far is greater than that of events felt in other swarms," he added.

Of the 282 earthquakes recorded from February 15th until about 2:00 p.m. on February 17th, 85 had a magnitude greater than 1. Most of the events occurred in the Solfatara area and in Pisciarelli. Despite the high number of earthquakes, Di Vito continues, «the measurements of hydrothermal activity remain within the values recorded in the last 5-6 months». The analysis of the earthquakes is underway. A possible explanation for the fact that we are so numerous in this swarm, Di Vito concluded, is that «there has been no seismic activity in Campi Flegrei for a long time».

Meanwhile, the population is on alert . "Where man can't, the Madonna can intervene," says a woman from Pozzuoli, where many believers have begun to recite rosaries, both on the seafront and outside the church of San Vincenzo, closed since last year due to the damage caused by the earthquake.

The people of Pozzuoli feel the threat of the earthquake again and gather in prayer in a city that is once again experiencing the nightmare of bradyseism. A difficulty that is faced in daily life in various areas of the city: for example in via Artiaco in Pozzuoli, near via Campana, where there is a large park of public housing managed by Acer, the regional agency of Campania for housing.

In this park, residents have often had to abandon their homes after strong tremors and sleep in their cars, but now they are asking the Municipality of Pozzuoli to use a large meadow, managed by the administration, to set up a tent city , so as to give residents the possibility of moving into tents on nights when the earth trembles.

A request - explain the citizens of the park - that they have already made several times and for which they hope to have a positive response given that, as they underline, the Palasport could not gather thousands of people.
