The man who last night in Rome, while driving drunk, pounced on three municipal police officers who were carrying out investigations at the scene of an accident was a Carabinieri officer from the ROS originally from Sardinia .

The 47-year-old man had his license revoked and was also charged with drunk driving. At the hospital, he was found to have a blood alcohol level of 1.9, almost four times the legal limit of 0.5 .

Three traffic police officers were injured in the accident, a man and two women. The man, a young 25-year-old officer who recently joined the Rome local police force, where he is still on probation , was the one who fared the worst. His name is Daniele Virgili: he lost a lot of blood and the doctors at the San Camillo hospital, where he is hospitalized with a red code, had to amputate one of his legs to save his life . The other leg was saved by reconstructing it with a very delicate operation. Also in the hospital were his two colleagues who were with him, aged 54 and 55, one of whom underwent surgery on her leg.

The accident occurred yesterday evening on Via Tiburtina, at the height of the Grande Raccordo Anulare bridge . The three officers of the IV Gruppo Tiburtino were carrying out the surveys of an accident and had put in place all the safety measures when the car driven by the Sardinian soldier hit them . A very violent impact, so much so that the vehicle after hitting them went to crash into the service vehicle of the local police.

The carabiniere stopped to provide assistance, he was reported for drunk driving and very serious injuries. He was on vacation and was returning from a dinner with friends.

Many messages of solidarity for the injured officers, starting from the commander of the local police of Rome Mario De Sclavis . "I am still deeply shocked by what happened last night. I express my closeness and solidarity to the officers who were injured and to their families," said the commander. "In particular - he added - my thoughts go to the officer who is only 25 years old and who recently joined the Corps, who unfortunately is still in serious conditions. As a parent, I find myself sharing this moment with the family with great apprehension and pain."

"The policeman was laughing"

Friends and family of Daniele Virgili point the finger at the driver and demand justice. According to Riccardo Virgili, the young officer's brother , the carabiniere was laughing, perhaps not fully realizing what had happened. "Seeing my brother like this with this drunk person laughing killed me," he said outside the hospital. "Last night my brother called me telling me to go there because he was dying. He told me 'I love you, you were a great brother to me but I'm dying. I can't see or feel my legs anymore.'"
