A dramatic turn of events in the corruption investigation that has shocked Liguria.

Former governor Giovanni Toti has reached an agreement with the prosecutor's office to negotiate a 2-year and 1-month sentence that will close the investigation into the crimes of improper corruption and illicit party financing, avoiding the trial already set for November 5.

The plea bargain, proposed by the Prosecutor's Office and which had to be implemented by September 15, does not include the charge of corruption and, by virtue of the Cartabia law, the former governor will see his sentence converted into 1,500 in community service if the agreement with the Prosecutor's Office is ratified by the preliminary hearing judge.

«Like all transactions, they arouse opposing feelings: on the one hand, the bitterness of not pursuing our reasons for innocence to the end, on the other, the relief of seeing a good part of them recognized» , Toti commented: «There remains that "contextual" crime defined as improper corruption, linked not to actions but to attitudes, an accusation difficult to prove due to its evanescence, but equally difficult to dismantle for the same reasons», continues the former governor.
