"Alberto is always very clear-headed, and the only thing he told me was that he hopes they will assume their responsibilities and that full clarity will be shed on the responsibilities ." This is how lawyer Giada Bocellari, speaking to reporters outside the Pavia Prosecutor's Office, summarized Alberto Stasi's thoughts regarding the evidence in his favor, namely the two negative results on the DNA from the pedals , which were not included in the case against him, according to the analyses by Stasi's own defense and the Pavia prosecutors.

This element, the one that emerged from the investigations of the Pavia prosecutor's office, "disintegrates" the conviction, according to Stasi's lawyers . "We can ask for a review. If the DNA on the pedals is missing, the entire conviction is nullified . I think everyone understands that; it was the central element," the lawyer said.

Antonio De Rensis, Stasi's other lawyer, calls the revelations "devastating": " Now I just don't see Alberto at the crime scene ," he declares. "We have great trust and respect for those who are conducting the investigation without leaving anything out," De Rensis added. " Perhaps the time has come for someone to start talking and pontificating less . A consultant to the public prosecutor has the obligation to report everything he does during his work to the public prosecutor, even if he ties his shoes, if it is related to the assignment he has been given."

So the attack, aimed at the men and not at the Carabinieri or the RIS in general, is precise: " No one told anyone that there were two highly negative pieces of information in the Stasi investigation. This will have to be explained . We can no longer hide behind 'I don't remember' statements. Someone will have to explain why prosecutor Rosa Muscio, at the Vigevano prosecutor's office during the first investigation, didn't have these pieces of information."

"My job," he concluded, "is to acquit Stasi; others will have to prosecute those who committed errors and horrors."

The reconstruction of the prosecutors

The consultants for the Pavia Public Prosecutor's Office, Previderè and Grignani, reconstructed the facts after analyzing the 'raw data', that is, the raw DNA data on the Umberto Dei pedals.

Geneticists at the RIS performed a negative "combur test" on the pedals on September 10, 2007. Only the following day did they collect samples from the pedals and handlebar grips. Analyzed on September 19, they found 2.78 nanograms of DNA, an "enormous" amount compared to the first negative test. The DNA was compatible with that of Chiara Poggi. The next day, however, someone at the RIS in Parma performed two new tests: both were negative, but the traces of those tests never appeared in the investigation file, nor were they ever provided to the Prosecutor's Office .

"No trace of these two electrophoresis runs with their completely negative tracings was found in any document of the proceedings/trial held against Alberto Stasi," the Prosecutor's Office emphasizes.
