A photomontage posted by Trieste Mayor Roberto Dipiazza on his social media profiles has gone viral: Democratic Party secretary Elly Schlein appears dressed as a Befana. The photo is accompanied by the caption "Happy Birthday Befana."

The initiative has been criticized by the secretary of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Democratic Party, Caterina Conti, who calls it an idea that "embodies right-wing culture." For Conti , "it's neither satire nor goliardic spirit, just disrespect" but "a sexist, vulgar, and unworthy gesture of someone holding public office, who uses body shaming as a political weapon."

And she continues: "Those who should represent all citizens choose the Christmas holidays to insult. It doesn't make anyone laugh and reveals narrow-mindedness." Finally, the secretary of the FVG Democratic Party reminded everyone that "this isn't just another blunder by DiPiazza at the end of his political career, but rather the prevailing culture of the right that governs us at all levels. We'll see who disagrees."

"But how can the mayor of a glorious and important city allow himself to post his greetings by giving the face of the leader of his rival party to the Befana?" This was the comment of the director of Tg La7 Enrico Mentana in a post that includes a photomontage of the mayor but the writing completely covers Schlein's face, leaving her body dressed as a Befana.
