The charred body of a 71-year-old, Cosima D'Amato, was found inside her son's country house in San Michele Salentino in the province of Brindisi, where firefighters intervened to put out a fire.

The woman's son, 47-year-old Alberto Villani, was arrested on charges of voluntary homicide. When questioned by the prosecutor of the Brindisi prosecutor's office, Alfredo Manca, he did not answer the magistrate's questions. Assisted by the lawyer Bartolo Gagliani, he was transferred to the Brindisi prison. The house in the Angeluzzi district was seized.

A ban had been issued against the man from approaching his mother, but last night it was the woman who went to visit him in the house where the fire occurred.

"The entire community is shocked", the words of the mayor Giovanni Allegrini. «The lady had resorted to the municipal offices on several occasions and always found a moment to listen. I am sure that the ongoing investigations will bring clarity to this painful matter."
