A strong earthquake was registered at 14.06 in Catania .
According to initial estimates by Ingv, the earthquake had a magnitude between 4.4 and 4.9 .
The event was clearly felt by the population in Catania and its province, but also in the Syracuse area .
Many people took to the streets, some shopping centers were evacuated as a precaution. The epicenter was located in the sea, about 6 kilometers from the Ionian coast at the height of Aci Castello , at a depth of about 20 km.
“It is a low magnitude for an earthquake of a tectonic nature. The shock was felt throughout eastern Sicily and in the inland areas up to Caltagirone due to the depth and proximity to the coast of the epicenter », explains Raffaele Azzaro, seismologist of the Etna Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.
The fire brigade has not received any reports of collapses at the moment.
