A car speeding at high speed mowed down several pedestrians this afternoon around 7pm in Lido di Camaiore (Lucca).

Two people died, German girls aged 18 and 19, six others were injured, including the 44-year-old Brazilian woman driving the vehicle, a Mercedes that hit a total of seven pedestrians.

Among the injured, one person is in serious condition, taken in red code by helicopter to Cisanello with numerous traumas.

The others were taken between Apiuane and Versilia, with injuries of varying severity.

The traffic police are investigating the dynamics. The driver apparently lost control of the vehicle for reasons yet to be clarified, hitting two red lights and running over the two victims between via Italica and via Roma, then continuing on, hitting the other five people and ending up crashing at the height of the Sirio hotel, also on via Italica. She then stopped the vehicle and got out until the traffic police arrived, who took her to the hospital for toxicology tests.

"It is an episode that has shocked the entire community, something like this has never happened before, a car at breakneck speed on Via Italica has hit and killed two people, damaged a dozen parked cars and hit everything it found during its journey, even after the second impact", this is how Mayor Marcello Pierucci described the episode, speaking to the TV station 50Canale. "We immediately made ourselves available by placing our municipal police at the disposal of the police of the Viareggio police station in charge of the investigation", he added.
