The Rovigo Penitentiary Police foiled a prison escape plot by a prisoner under the special detention regime. The plan was to have been carried out with the support of accomplices outside the prison, using a helicopter, and then fleeing abroad, possibly through violent acts.

The discovery was made after a check and search of cells, where cell phones were found illegally smuggled into the high-security section and hidden in common areas. The discovery of the devices led to criminal proceedings against several inmates for unauthorized access to communication devices. The prosecutor's office then ordered further investigations, conducting technical tests on the seized cell phones, which uncovered one inmate's escape plan.

Therefore, the prison management took preventative action to prevent the escape. The Department of Penitentiary Administration in Rome, the Regional Penitentiary Administration Office in Padua, and the Prefect of Rovigo were informed of the incident. They intensified surveillance outside the prison and strengthened perimeter security and security at certain sensitive locations in the city of Rovigo.
