A prison already described by many staff as "a powder keg" for the living conditions of the inmates due to the long-standing problems of the structure, including bedbugs in the cells and recently also the lack of water . A situation at the limit , which also led to a complaint from around fifty inmates .

And that yesterday, with the death by suicide of a young prisoner, a twenty-year-old Tunisian, sparked a protest in Sollicciano that continued until late in the evening .

Two sections of the judiciary were involved, around eighty inmates (in total there are around 560) involved who set the fire. The flames were then put out by firefighters who eventually managed to enter safely.

In the meantime , there is also a prisoner to be found : he climbed onto the roof during the protest and was never seen again, triggering searches in the penitentiary area.

Following the protest, the prefecture activated the security plan outside the penitentiary while the prison management activated the crisis unit.

The police and carabinieri were brought together outside the prison and 118 as well as the firefighters were alerted. No injuries reported, neither among the inmates nor among the prison police.

The mayor Sara Funaro also spoke about what happened, expressing «great sorrow for the young life cut short today in Sollicciano, yet another tragic death in a penitentiary institution. We have been denouncing the dramatic conditions of the Sollicciano prison for some time: it is necessary to intervene on a situation that can no longer be ignored by the government, compared to a system that is now collapsing and a structure like that of Sollicciano in which the extremely problematic context leads to worsening of conditions of hardship".
