"Seventy-nine years ago, the Italian people decreed, with their vote, the birth of the Republic, at the culmination of a long journey that began with the war of Liberation. With the referendum of June 2, 1946, Italians chose to continue a journey founded on the values of freedom, democracy and peace, later transposed into the Constitution, which would soon see the light. Values on which our civil community is founded and which all institutions are called to draw inspiration from in working for the community."
The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, wrote this in a message sent to the Chief of Defense Staff, Luciano Portolano, on the occasion of June 2, Republic Day. In Rome, the official celebrations began at 9:15 with the Head of State's homage to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Altar of the Fatherland, where President Mattarella laid a laurel wreath. He was welcomed by the Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto.
Present were the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the presidents of the Senate and the Chamber Ignazio La Russa and Lorenzo Fontana, the mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri, together with the heads of the Armed Forces and the Police Forces. Great participation by citizens and tourists, many of whom gathered in Piazza Venezia, behind the barriers.
