Petition on the change.org website against Giovanni Caruso, professor of criminal and legal law from Turetta , the young man who confessed to the murder of his ex-girlfriend Giulia Cecchettin.

In fact, the teacher teaches at the University of Padua, the same university where the girl studied and which decided to award Cecchettin a posthumous degree .

The signatories' request is that Caruso "renounces the defense or, otherwise, the University of Padua expresses itself publicly by dissociating itself from the inappropriate choice" of the lawyer .

«You cannot be with the victims and the executioners at the same time, playing a double game. On the one hand, the University awards a posthumous degree to Giulia Cecchettin, taking a stand against violence against women, and on the other hand, it does not utter a single word about one of its important members who defends the murderer and self-confessed offender ."

The petition was launched by an employee of the Ministry of Culture.

The rector of the university Daniela Mapelli replies: «We have reached a short circuit for a democratic country, where everyone, including Mr. Turetta, has the right to defense . Furthermore, the University could never tell Professor Caruso, a very good professor who also practices as a freelancer, whether or not he can defend someone."

In defense of Caruso also the Board of Directors of Criminal Law professors according to which « the defense that the lawyer is legitimately exercising cannot cast doubt on the civic and ethical sharing of the fight against gender violence , which we, as criminal law teachers, develop in teaching".
