Tragedy in the night in Milan.

A fire broke out in the Casa dei spouses elderly residence on the southeastern outskirts of the city. The toll is six people dead, over 80 hospitalized and two seriously injured. Two women were charred to death in the room where the fire started, while three other women and a man died due to the fumes of smoke that filled the corridors.

Four advanced rescue vehicles, one coordination vehicle and 11 ambulances worked on site throughout the night, shuttling between hospitals for hours.

According to an initial reconstruction , the fire would have started from a room of the residence. Excluding the malicious matrix, the most probable hypothesis is the short circuit of an electronic device near the bed : from there the flames would have started and quickly enveloped beds, oxygen bags, lockers and wheelchairs.

The fire "was contained - said the mayor of Milan Beppe Sala, who made an inspection of the structure together with the councilor for security Marco Granelli -. In these cases, one must say that it could have been worse, but six dead are a very heavy toll ».

"Proges is committed with all its people to supporting the rescuers, whom we thank for their dedication, and the Authorities in ascertaining the dynamics of the event by lending them maximum collaboration": this is how Giancarlo Anghinolfi, general manager explained in a note of the cooperative that manages the RSA Casa dei Coniugi in Milan. "We are deeply saddened by what happened and express our deepest condolences to the families of the guests who fell victim to the tragic accident."

The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella also spoke on the tragedy and sent a message to Sala expressing "condolences for the victims of the very serious fire that hit the 'Casa dei coniugi' and the city of Milan" and hoping that the dynamics will be clarified of what happened.
