Thousands of people at the march organized in Rome for May Day by Cgil, Cisl and Uil. At the head, the general secretary of Cgil, Maurizio Landini, next to the banner that features the slogan of the day "United for safe work". Among the writings of the Cgil, also one that recalls the referendums on work and citizenship of June 8 and 9 with the writing "Voting is our revolt". And another with the writing: "We vote yes".
Landini immediately launched an attack on the government in view of the May 8 meeting on workplace safety .
"We always go to meetings," he says, "but we need to change because up to now they have been fake. Enough with communicating decisions that have already been made. Models of comparison like this are useless. It's time to stop with the propaganda, it's time to solve the problems ." "And if they want to solve the problems, they need to start giving answers to the requests we have made. The comparisons must be real negotiations," he emphasizes.
The government, "I think it's clear for all to see, is not doing what it should be doing. Because work-related deaths are increasing, not decreasing. And accidents are increasing too. We are facing a real massacre that must be stopped ." "It's not enough to allocate a little money," he says, " it's necessary to change the laws and change the business model: we've been making these requests for some time. Up to now there have been no discussions and the measures are not going in the right direction ."
Also at the demonstration was the secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, who greeted Landini with a hug.
The day began with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni who on X claimed the results of her executive on the issue of work, "one of the pillars on which this government has based its action. In two and a half years, over a million jobs have been created and the total number of employed people has reached an all-time high: more than 24 million and 300 thousand. Female employment has also reached its highest level ever. Unemployment is at its lowest in 18 years. A concrete commitment that continues also on the security front, with new resources, more controls, incentives and a strong push on prevention and training. There is still a lot to do, but the direction is clear".
