" Labor Day is a celebration for the Republic. It represents a reason for reflection and commitment. These are the words spoken at the Quirinale by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella on the occasion of the feast of May 1st . " The integrity of the person and the workers is an essential part of our constitutional pact ", he added, and "we would like the broader front to mobilize around this need, an alliance between institutions, civil society, social and economic forces , to strongly underline the commitment to fight a scourge that upsets the lives of too many families, represents a humiliation for the business world and a defeat for those who, by producing goods and services, see their business disfigured by these deaths ".

Work “is a tool for people's progress and affirmation, not a potentially lethal gamble . The goal of more work cannot translate into more accidents at work. For this, an exceptional effort must be made . The commitment to recovery is, at the same time, a commitment to improve production conditions and to beat the tragedy of deaths at work ".

A drama that Pope Francis also spoke about at Regina Coeli : "Today is Labor Day. May it be a stimulus to renew the commitment so that work is dignified everywhere and for everyone and that the will to grow an economy of peace. I would like to recall the workers who died at work, a very widespread tragedy, perhaps too much ".
