"Reflecting on the successes achieved, some of the stark contradictions of our time stand out. Research and science are saving lives, in ever-increasing numbers, yet we still have to witness the spread of irrational beliefs and destructive fake news, gripping segments of the population, however small, in fear." This was stated by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, at the "Days of Research" Celebration at the Quirinale Palace. "The prejudicial opposition to vaccines," the Head of State added, "is one of the most disconcerting symptoms: when we are faced with painful news stories, with adults or children risking or even losing the lives they could have easily defended, we feel the need to counter the work of those who seek to poison public opinion."
