«The cardinal principles of freedom, equality, justice, respect for human dignity, are theoretical statements, but they represent the ethical compass , the orientation of the daily commitment of the army of the armed forces».

The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella said this when he received the Chief of Staff of the Army Carmine Masiello at the Quirinale on the occasion of the 165th anniversary of the founding of the force .

On this occasion, the President praised the Sassari Brigade and the Italian military stationed in Lebanon: "Our thoughts must now turn to the Sassari Brigade, part of the UNIFIL mission command, and to the personnel engaged in bilateral training and support initiatives for the Lebanese Armed Forces," Mattarella said in his remarks. He added: "The Italian soldiers, along with those of the other international contingents deployed under the auspices of the United Nations , are conducting this delicate peacekeeping mission, which is the last available instrument on the ground for the international community to promote a peaceful resolution to the grave ongoing crisis, in extremely difficult security conditions. The UN's unwavering resilience is commendable."
